Very few changes needed to made to the exterior of this lovely home. However, the front and back entry were both dark and inefficient. The basement was unfinished; the circulation on the main floor was choppy and dark. The Master Bathroom had extensive quantities of red wallpaper, even on the ceiling. With some creative space planning and streamlining, the house now flows well for parties and daily life allows natural light to connect the spaces in a cozy way.
What began as a simple cottage many years ago has evolved into a gorgeous home. The final link was an additional garage stall with more storage, new front entry, half bath and elevator. In the process a new, enlarged deck allows for ample gathering space for these fabulous hosts. An outdoor shower was incorporated for a quick rinse after kayaking or swimming in Lake Michigan. Now their beautiful home is truly complete.
This lovely home was beautifully decorated with lovely features, but the dining area was compact. We were able to expand the house by enclosing the existing porch, adding insulation & new exterior windows. The flooring was seamlessly integrated into the old. The side porch was expanded and enclosed to make a wonderful four-season porch.
A true story of a beautiful, century-old home that has been adapted for the next generation. A gem in the Historic District, the addition & renovation of this home allows a wonderful family to stay in the heart of the city while enjoying the amenities of new construction. A blending of old and new has expanded their amazing Kitchen while creating a new Master Bedroom Suite, Mudroom, Half Bath, as well as a Basement Family Room, Bathroom & Laundry Room. Even a seemingly compact addition can have a huge impact when interior spaces are able to be creatively re-purposed. I couldn't be happier for this lovely family.
Relocating the stairs from a remote portion of the house to the center of the living space allows for some fabulous views. In addition, the house now has a cohesive floor plan and beautiful features.
Every space in your house has possibilities. Basements can be left unfinished for storage, but they can also be transformed into an extension of your home. After they have been completed, it is hard to remember the shell they once were. This is an example of such a metamorphasis.
Even seemingly small projects require careful consideration. Some of the details that are needed for even a fence project: obtaining permits, providing site plan(s), designing gates, incorporating landscaping, providing adequate structural support & customizing elevations. With a combination of personal construction experience & design experience, these are decisions that can be made quickly for an efficient design & construction process.
In 1978 when this unique home was built, it was built with cutting-edge design features. Over time, the waterfront home needed careful updates in keeping with the spirit of the original design. It was fun to work within the constraints of an already lovely home while giving it a newly-contemporary vibe.
Pilates in Holland
An amazing woman starting an amazing business. It was an honor to assist Mandy Compagner in obtaining a building permit for her new, fabulous space. She is a wonderful success story.
Please consider visiting Mandy to transform & strength your body -- inside & out. She is such a kind, experienced & thoughtful teacher. Besides, as Joseph H. Pilates said, "In 20 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a different body."
This was a very special project for the City of Round Rock, Texas, and the Programming project of my dreams. Finished in collaboration with KAH Architecture, it armed their city with short- & long-term spatial planning goals allowing them to expand it to an adjacent property while maintaining rental space for income until they are ready to grow their staff again. Meeting with every employee & department laid the groundwork for complete information-gathering. It was a pleasure to prepare documentation, office standards and Powerpoint presentations that were completely customized for the individuals -- not just the corporation. Forward-thinking & successful!
Every aspect of the renovation was meticulously monitored through project management, allowing for the kind of attention to detail that is rarely seen. In the end, the home was restored to its former glory while converting unused spaces to usable ones. The clients, contractor, sub-contractors, architect & I all worked together to create a masterpiece.
While working with KAH Architecture, I was privileged to be the Project Manager for a massive YMCA remodeling project. Although it was completed by multiple contractors through at least five phases, most of which happened simultaneously, it was an incredibly rewarding set of projects. Seeing the space being utilized by the community exactly as was planned is a joyful reward.
The Round Rock YMCA now has a cohesive collection of services in what was once a strip mall. It now offers a large salt-water natatorium with a warm water therapy pool, large hot tub, sauna, lap pool & beach-entry children's water toys & slide. All of which is covered by a retractable roof. A new gymnasium, new entrances on the front & back, new reception desk, a new driveway through what was once part of the building, as well as an expanded child care facility with playground. It is run by people who give their all. What a great resource!
Working remotely takes a special set of skills, but it allows design influences to transcend space & time. For many years, New York City & Brooklyn have been kind enough to share their amazing architectural energy with me.
